Family: limits for a child's account
How a parent supervises an account, what can be limited, and what cannot.
A parent or guardian can supervise another account and set limits for it. Accounts are for people aged 13 and older.
Setting it up
1. Both people need their own account. The parent's must be at least a week old. 2. The parent opens Settings, then Family, and types the other account's handle. 3. The other person signs in to their own account, opens Family and accepts. Nothing applies before that. 4. The parent sets the limits on the Family page. They apply at once.
One account can be supervised by one parent, and a parent can supervise up to six accounts.
What can be limited
- Age rating: the highest rating the account can play, download or buy. A game without a rating counts as the highest.
- Play time per day: in minutes, from 15. When it is used up the game closes with a message, and it starts again the next day (days are counted in UTC).
- Spending per month: in US dollars. 0 means no purchases at all. Purchases, tips and support for creators all count.
- Friends and messages: can be switched off entirely.
The parent sees how many minutes were played today and how much was spent this month. The parent does not see which games were played or any messages.
Ending it
Only the parent can change a limit or end the supervision, on the Family page. The supervised account can see its limits but cannot change them.
What it cannot do
The limits belong to the account. Free games on this site can be played without signing in, and a limit cannot follow someone who is signed out. Play time is counted while a game runs on its page here, or is started from the desktop app; a downloaded game that is started by hand, outside the app, is not timed. Games that open in a tab of their own cannot be timed, so they are not offered on the site to an account with a daily limit. Use these limits together with the controls of the device and browser your child uses.
