The desktop app, cloud saves and controllers

Connecting the app, how saves follow you between computers, and setting up a controller.

The desktop app

The app installs the games you download, keeps them up to date, and starts them. Download it under Settings › Desktop app. It is an early version: Windows and macOS do not know it yet and warn when you open the installer; the download page says how to continue. Once installed, the app keeps itself up to date.

  • Connecting. The app shows a code. Open Settings › Desktop app › Connect the app on this site, signed in, type the code, check the computer's name and agree. The app never asks for your password.
  • Only type a code you started yourself. Someone who gets you to type their code would get access to your library on their computer.
  • What a connected computer can do: see your library, download your games, sync your saved files and start games. It cannot buy anything, send messages or change your account.
  • Disconnecting. Every connected computer is listed under Settings › Desktop app, and can be disconnected there at any time. Installed games stay on that computer.
  • Updates download only the files of a game that changed.
  • Without a connection a game still starts for three days after it was last started with one.

Cloud saves

  • For downloaded games, the app keeps the files in a game's save folder in step between your computers, up to 100 MB per game.
  • Games made for this site use that folder by themselves. For other games, tell the app where the game keeps its saves, under Settings for this game in the app.
  • If two computers both have new saves, nothing is overwritten. The app shows when and where the other save was made and asks which to keep. If you keep the cloud's, the files on this computer are first copied to a backup folder.
  • You can delete a game's cloud save under Settings › Desktop app. The files on your computers are not touched.
  • Cloud saves belong to games in your library. If a game is refunded or removed from the site, its cloud save can no longer be fetched; the files already on your computers stay.
  • Browser games that use the developer kit save to your account directly, without the app.

Controllers

  • Most browser games and downloads work with a controller as it is.
  • Under Settings › Controller you can see what your controller sends and change which button or stick does what. That layout is used by browser games that read the controller through the site's developer kit. Other games keep their own layout.
